Allophonic and Phonotactic Constraints Are Useful
نویسنده
چکیده
It is well known that phonemes have different acoustic/phonetic realizations depending on the context. For example, the phoneme / t / is typically realized with a different allophone (phonetic variant) in syllable initial position than in syllable final position. In syllable initial position (e.g., Lorn), / t / is almost always released (with a strong burst of energy) and aspirated (with / h / like noise), whereas in syllable final position (e.g., ca[), / t / is often unreleased and unaspirated. It is common practice in speech research to distinguish acoustic/phonetic properties that vary a great deal with context (e.g., release and aspiration) from those that are relatively invariant to context (e.g., place, manner and voicing). In the past, the emphasis has been on invariants; allophonic variation is traditionally seen as problematic for recognition.

Acoustic correlates of phonological status and their effect on phonological processing
Recent work has shown that by 11 months, infants process sounds differently depending on whether they are in an allophonic relationship in the infants' ambient language (i.e., nasal and oral vowels in American English) or a phonemic one (i.e., nasal and oral vowels in Quebec French; Seidl et al., 2009). Previous experimental work suggests that adults' perceptual similarity and lexical access is...
متن کاملOptionality and Gradience in Persian Phonology: An Optimality Treatment
The distribution of the allophones of /?/in certain contexts involves free variation and gradient preferences. An organized survey was conducted to elicit the judgments of 37 native Persian speakers concerning the well-formedness of /?/allophonic behavior in five different phonological positions. The results showed that the differences in judgment between the various categories are not just t...
متن کاملLinguistic Levels : Phonology
Changes in the sound system of a language may involve many different aspects. First, phonemes may be added to an inventory, they may become obsolete, or they may change their shape. Second, allophonic rules may emerge (e.g. "voice intersonorant fricatives"), disappear, or change. Third, phonotactic restrictions may be added (e.g. no syllable-initial Iknl sequences, so that such clusters are red...
متن کاملPhonotactic Constraints and the Segmentation of Cantonese Speech
Two word-spotting experiments were conducted to examine the question of whether native Cantonese listeners are constrained by phonotactic information in the segmentation of Cantonese continuous speech. Because there are no legal consonant clusters occurred within individual Cantonese words, so this kind of phonotactic information of words may most likely cue native Cantonese listeners the locat...
متن کاملPhonotactic Constraints Are Activated across Languages in Bilinguals
During spoken language comprehension, auditory input activates a bilingual's two languages in parallel based on phonological representations that are shared across languages. However, it is unclear whether bilinguals access phonotactic constraints from the non-target language during target language processing. For example, in Spanish, words with s+ consonant onsets cannot exist, and phonotactic...
